I bought this book to get me ready for the postal exam 931. This book does have everything in it, but it is harder then the actual test. Wish more things in this book were on the test. The test covers everything from HVAC to electronics, math to listening to directtions. The book is a refresher and did help some. But it is a little overboard in my opioion. For those who are going to take the test know somethng about everything.

The exam that I took had absolutely NOTHING in common whatsoever with what was covered in this so-called study guide. Unlike the SAT or the GRE study guides where you encounter similar, or even the identical questions in some instances, this was not the case in this particular situation. After several months of intense study, I was still completely unprepared for the exam I was given. The only way to pass this USPS exam is to be thoroughly familiar with electrical circuitry as well as with tool and mechanical theory and practice. This is an exam where one either knows the material asked or he does not. Studying this book will NOT help you. The only reason I gave it two stars is because it does contain some decent review information as regards definitions and basic computer terminology and concepts. However, you will find virtually none of this on the actual exam. Same thing is true with the binary, decimal, hexidecimal, and octal number systems; you MUST know these systems thoroughly. Of course, you are not allowed a scientific calculator which makes these numerical conversions somewhat problematic. I do not have the mechanical study guide so I cannot speak to its utility. I can only say that studying this book will not help you with this impossibly difficult exam.

Hardly "groundbreaking"
The Gardner brothers publish an investment newsletter. That is their primary business. This book is a primer for the neophyte investor. This book does a good job of walking the beginner through the thought process that the Gardner's believe will lead to financial success in the stock market.

Here's the problem. If you track (and calculate for yourself) the Gardners' claimed successes with their recommended monthly stock picks as published in their newsletter, you do not achieve the same stellar results they often claim. I subscribed to their newsletter for many years, followed their investment advice precisely, and never achieved the same results they claimed. Not even close.

How was this mathematical slight of hand accomplished? I still have not quite figured that out. I have never seen their investment results tallied in great detail. I've only seen the final results. Not the calculations. Anyway, this book details in significant detail how the Gardners' investment decision process works. It is certainly interesting, as an academic exercise, to see how their thoughts are generated. As far as laying your money down on their recommendations...I think there are many better advisors out there who will help you achieve better results.

Good primer for believers in active vs passive investing
In this age of full disclosure, I received this book free from the Amazon Vine program....with the condition that I publish a book review.

Since I am a believer in passive style investing (index funds) I probably would not have bought this book. My knowledge of the Motley Fool is that it advocates active investing through common stock selection. But, I am always open to learning new things, even from advocates of active versus passive investing.

I already knew the Motley Fool guys had built up quite a business empire. I was aware of their web site and my local Sunday newspaper covers info from their syndicated newspaper columns. This book is also an advertisement for many paid services that they offer.

They do a good job in the book of describing how to pick stocks using basically fundamental financial analysis. They offer a process for evaluating stocks and explain each step in the process.

I think they could have done a better job on risk tolerance and asset allocation with bonds. They advocate 100% stocks for young people, 10 to 20% bonds once you reach within 10 years of retirement, and 40% bonds at retirement. They also mention the classic Dalbar studies which show investors do not achieve market index returns because they buy high and sell low.

Their asset allocation examples only include stocks, REITs, and commodities. I think they should have included intermediate bonds and TIPs as well so investors learn the impact of fixed income investments. During the Crash of 2008, the only asset classes which did not crash were cash and bonds.

They should have also included the standard risk tolerance chart with regards to risk of a loss and asset allocation:

100% stocks........50% maximum annual loss
90% stocks.........45% maximum annual loss
80% stocks.........40% maximum annual loss
70% stocks.........35% maximum annual loss
60% stocks.........30% maximum annual loss
50% stocks.........25% maximum annual loss

Many investors got to painfully experience the reality of this chart during the Crash of 2008.

I believe most investors would be less likely to panic and sell their stocks in a downturn if they owned some bonds. I would advocate a rule-of-thumb like 115 minus your age in stocks. Jack Bogle, founder of Vanguard, is even more conservative with the rule-of-thumb "your age in bonds".

I have no issue with their recommendation of a 60:40 portfolio in retirement. This is the classic mix used by pension funds. Both Bengen's classic study on safe withdrawal rates in retirement and The Trinity Study suggest one should keep 40% to 60% in retirement to keep up with inflation yet avoid the volatility of having too high of stock allocation.

All in all, this is a very readable book with specific guidelines for picking stocks.

As long as you are aware of the incredibly difficult odds of beating the return of low cost index funds, this book gives you a place to start with regards to selecting common stocks.

Don't be foolish about investing
This book is a great beginners guide to smart investing. The authors take you through all the various styles of stock picking: dividend payers, Blue-Chip bargains, Small-Cap treasures, and my favorite Risk Takers and Rule Breakers. They explain each category with the up and down side of each. They will introduce you to the newsletters that they produce that give you their own timely researched picks in all of these areas.
You will learn why it is important at this point in history to invest in companies in other parts of the world. Many of which trade on our stock exchanges in the U.S. The authors describe investing in China, India, Brazil, and Russia like going back in time many years to when our own country was beginning to grow. Don't miss this second opportunity to have your investments grow with these emerging markets.
Appendix A gives you all the rules you need to pick the right mutual funds for your accounts by looking at the funds managerial tenure, five year returns, expense ratio, load fee, and alpha rating.
This book may be to simple to the more seasoned investor, but I believe new investors will enjoy this fun and easy to read introduction to the world of investing, and will learn what is needed to begin or realign your investments in these troubled times. You will be prepared for the next bull market.

Professor Smith has served as a discussion leader for Continuing Professional Education programs for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Federal Tax Workshops, and various state CPA societies. He has conducted programs in more than 40 states for about 25,000 CPAs. He has been the recipient of the AICPA's Outstanding Discussion Leader Award and the American Taxation Association/Arthur Andersen Teaching Innovation Award. Among his other awards are the Virginia Society of CPAs' Outstanding Accounting Educator Award and the James Madison University's Outstanding Accounting Educator Award. He was the president of the Administrators of Accounting Programs Group (AAPG) in 1991–1992. He was the faculty adviser for the William and Mary teams that received first place in the Andersen Tax Challenge in 1994, 1995, 1997, 2000, and 2001, and in the Deloitte Tax Case Study Competition in 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2006.Eugene Willis is the Arthur Andersen Alumni Professor of Accountancy at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He joined the Illinois faculty in 1975 after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. He has published articles in leading academic and professional journals, including The Accounting Review, The Journal of the American Taxation Association, The Journal of Accountancy, and The Journal of Taxation. We were shy about barging in on Randy Pausch's valuable time to ask him a few questions about his expansion of his famous Last Lecture into the book by the same name, but he was gracious enough to take a moment to answer. (See Randy to the right with his kids, Dylan, Logan, and Chloe.) As anyone who has watched the lecture or read the book will understand, the really crucial question is the last one, and we weren't surprised to learn that the "secret" to winning giant stuffed animals on the midway, like most anything else, is sheer persistence.
Amazon.com: I apologize for asking a question you must get far more often than you'd like, but how are you feeling?
Pausch: The tumors are not yet large enough to affect my health, so all the problems are related to the chemotherapy. I have neuropathy (numbness in fingers and toes), and varying degrees of GI discomfort, mild nausea, and fatigue. Occasionally I have an unusually bad reaction to a chemo infusion (last week, I spiked a 103 fever), but all of this is a small price to pay for walkin' around.
Amazon.com: Your lecture at Carnegie Mellon has reached millions of people, but even with the short time you apparently have, you wanted to write a book. What did you want to say in a book that you weren't able to say in the lecture?
Pausch: Well, the lecture was written quickly--in under a week. And it was time-limited. I had a great six-hour lecture I could give, but I suspect it would have been less popular at that length ;-).
A book allows me to cover many, many more stories from my life and the attendant lessons I hope my kids can take from them. Also, much of my lecture at Carnegie Mellon focused on the professional side of my life--my students, colleagues and career. The book is a far more personal look at my childhood dreams and all the lessons I've learned. Putting words on paper, I've found, was a better way for me to share all the yearnings I have regarding my wife, children and other loved ones. I knew I couldn't have gone into those subjects on stage without getting emotional.
Amazon.com: You talk about the importance--and the possibility!--of following your childhood dreams, and of keeping that childlike sense of wonder. But are there things you didn't learn until you were a grownup that helped you do that?
Pausch: That's a great question. I think the most important thing I learned as I grew older was that you can't get anywhere without help. That means people have to want to help you, and that begs the question: What kind of person do other people seem to want to help? That strikes me as a pretty good operational answer to the existential question: "What kind of person should you try to be?"
Amazon.com: One of the things that struck me most about your talk was how many other people you talked about. You made me want to meet them and work with them--and believe me, I wouldn't make much of a computer scientist. Do you think the people you've brought together will be your legacy as well?
Pausch: Like any teacher, my students are my biggest professional legacy. I'd like to think that the people I've crossed paths with have learned something from me, and I know I learned a great deal from them, for which I am very grateful. Certainly, I've dedicated a lot of my teaching to helping young folks realize how they need to be able to work with other people--especially other people who are very different from themselves.
Amazon.com: And last, the most important question: What's the secret for knocking down those milk bottles on the midway?
Pausch: Two-part answer: 1) long arms 2) discretionary income / persistence
Actually, I was never good at the milk bottles. I'm more of a ring toss and softball-in-milk-can guy, myself. More seriously, though, most people try these games once, don't win immediately, and then give up. I've won *lots* of midway stuffed animals, but I don't ever recall winning one on the very first try. Nor did I expect to. That's why I think midway games are a great metaphor for life. From Publishers WeeklyMade famous by his Last Lecture at Carnegie Mellon and the quick Internet proliferation of the video of the event, Pausch decided that maybe he just wasn't done lecturing. Despite being several months into the last stage of pancreatic cancer, he managed to put together this book. The crux of it is lessons and morals for his young and infant children to learn once he is gone. Despite his sometimes-contradictory life rules, it proves entertaining and at times inspirational. Surprisingly, the audiobook doesn't include the reading of Pausch's actual Last Lecture, which he gave on September 18, 2007, a month after being diagnosed. Erik Singer provides an excellent inflective voice that hints at the reveries of past experiences with family and children while wielding hope and regret for family he will leave behind. you.. yes YOU behind the terminal, surfing the web, maybe finding that cheap chotcky to buy or something. Stop what you are doing if you have come across this book and this review. You need to read this more than you think! Within the confines of 350 pages you can be transported to a world that for most Westerner's and specifically Americans, is probably very unknown, and more than likely, highly misunderstood. In this world you will be introduced to a man named Greg Mortenson, or as you soon to know him, as Greg Sahib.. The story that is told by David Oliver Revin, will not just be inspiring, will not be just teeth clenching, it will make you re-evaluate what you do in your life. While most of us may talk about the incapacity of the administration, or some (unfortunatly) the hatred of the middle East, or maybe some of you are even lying down in the streets, but there is ONE person who is TRULY doing something about the problems of foreign policy by litteraly getting his hands dirty touching the earth to build a school foundation, and risking his life ten times over. When you have read this journey, you will be saying to yourself, did he really do that? That guy is CRAZY! Did that really happen?, the Taliban? , How is that possible? In the journey that is fortold of a change of fate through a failed mountain expedition, you can see what the spirit of the individual can do and how it can be transformed. As the events of 9/11 soon come to fruition, Greg couldn't be in a better place at the right time, and with David's narration, you are litteraly put in the drivers seat. After reading Mortensen's journey, you will want to litteraly book a plane ticket to somewhere you have never been before. In reading the accomplishments of a somewhat flawed (hey what person is perfect) individual, you will feel small and insignifigant. David Relin will not just explain what Greg did, he will make you live it, with some enjoyable side narrations that will make you grin. In Three Cups of Tea, David has managed more than anything to explain the heart of a problem (Islamic hatred of the West) of a very complicated nature (through numerous foreign policy debacles and politics spanning decades), and how one man knows of an easy solution (Go to poor regions of the Middle East and give education and extend the olive branch. Build schools for the poorest of the poor, ecspecially for girls. And more importantly, let them know that it was done.. by an American). As if it was so difficult to understand. I encourage you to take this journey and figure out that sometimes the biggest problems in life require some of the most common sense solutions. I also echo the other comments on here that you should buy this book from the actually CAI institute and consider a donation as well. Greg Mortensen is doing what he is doing best, and his passion comes through the pages. For myself my passion is to write. Like Gregg I feel it is what I can do best (when I put my effort my passion, and my soul into it). now if you'll excuse me... I have to go write a check.

After four trips over the past three years to Pakistan and Azad Kashmir, and after founding Kashmir Family Aid (www.kashmirfamily.org) to aid victims of the Oct 8, 2005 earthquake, I whole-heartedly endorse Greg Mortenson and his work. This book adds new life to the over-wraught dictum that "one CAN make a difference." Beyond that, if one wants to truly get inside the rural Pakistani's heart and soul, this is mandatory reading. My personal experience has been that once I met these people (and yes, had tea with them in their tiny homes, or in the quake region, in their tents), it was difficult to want to leave to return to the West. It's a hard thing to explain but Mortenson's book will absolutely do the job. A powerful thread within his story: It would be impossible not to love these people after getting to know them one-on one. These remote village people are simple, strong and proud. Their lives are spent nurturing their families and working hard in a politically and environmentally tortured region. One School at a Time (Paperback) Greg Mortenson's story of a failed attempt at summiting K2 and a later success at transforming and impacting the lives of thousands of Pakistani children through the construction of schools is inspiring, touching and heroic. On the basis of the story alone, I would give it 5 stars. It is unfortunate, therefore, that it is told so poorly by David Relin, whose writing was so problematic that I can only give the book 3. Moretnson's trials, obstacles and his perseverence in overcoming these challenges to realize his dream of building (initally only one, later 23) schools in the remote regions of Pakistan is magnificent; a man of lesser toughness, integrity, temperment and stuborness certainly would have given up in the face of so many setbacks: financial as he sought to raise monies, personal as his quest took a toll on his personal life, and political, as Pakistanis, mujahadeen, and later, Americans sought to distract or derail his noble work. If you can get past the pained and sometimes overdone writing, these are the gems of the story. It seems many can overlook this shortcoming given the power of Mortenson's deeds. I could not. Sadly, it took a lot of effort for me to look past the sophmoric writing, which I found to be a distraction from enjoying the larger plot. As other reviewers have noted, describing Mortenson in the third person ("Mortenson settled back into the passenger seat, a place of honor ...") seems odd when reading non-fiction. I can forgive this; it was the style of the prose that set my teeth on edge. Referring to the mountainous terrain as "celestial rocks", "great brown crenulated walls" and how the "Karkoram knifed relentlessly into the a defensless blue sky" demoted the very real contributions Mortenson was making by writing in a pulp-fiction style. Don't misunderstand me - I love my fiction - but this style of writing is very out of place here. I also didn't care for the minutae provided for every individual Mortenson came across as he relentlessly worked to get his school off the ground. A little background information is helpful, even appropriate, but Relin detracted from the larger issue of what Mortenson was doing by giving a biopic of so many people that, in the end, had only a cursory role in the project. These criticisms aside, the analysis of how Pakistan (and Islamic central Asia) was transformed by the creation and introduction of madrasas in the late 1990's and early millenium, the political, social and religious tightrope that Mortenson sucessfully navigated, and the remarkable descriptions of tribal culture, customs and rituals were magnificent. One cannot but think that the work that Mortenson has done (and continues to do) is what we as a nation need to do in order to foster understanding, build lasting relationships and successfully address the conflict we face in that part of the world. As Mortenson said, "The only way we can defeat terrorism is if people in this country (Pakistan) where terrorists exist learn to respect and love Americans, and if we can respect and love these people here. What's the difference between them becoming a productive local citizen or a terrorist? I think the key is education." I agree. Mortenson's story is remarkable, and needs to be told. It is unfortunate that it was told in the manner it is here. Tighter editing (or perhaps a different ghost writer) would have done much to do his story justice. Nonetheless it is inspiring, informative and moving. Recommended.
